This is a word-for-word transcription of the 160 question cards submitted at the 2/1 "Race, Power and Privilege" Forum in Foellinger Auditorium. There have not been any grammatical or spelling changes unless Word automatically corrected spelling/grammar. I'm representing my relatives of the Dakota Sioux Tribe. My beautiful grandchildren only 2 years old are dancers. My nieces and nephews all dance in beautiful Sioux regalia. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law also dance at pow-wows. It is shameful that this racism continues. Respect also my ancestors. I have lived here in Urbana for 34 years, have gone to school here, and never have understood why you can't just have a tiger dance! I'm Ojibwe.... In Light of the relative obliviousness of folks who have bumper stickers who point of departure is George Wallace's "Segregation, Past, Present, Now, Forever," what are the concrete steps to be taken? What would you say to those who would argue that opportunities like this forum allows the University of Illinois to be seen as progressive without substatively address the relative obliviousness and ahistorical mindset which allows people to have bumper stickers and posters on campus which take George Wallace's Segregation, Past, Now, (Present) Forever as a point of departure? The institution is at a point where it is entering a period of organizational change. Social theorist Max Weber describes the point where organizational culture shifts as a time when is created an organizational "void" or "vacuum." During this period of redefining organizational culture new cultures can evolve either in a positive or negative direction. What preparation is taking place to prepare for the University for a new and healthy organizational culture to develop? I understand that tacos and tequila night did get out of hand and it was very discrimitive. What I do not understand is why the Chief is so bad? The Chief represents Native American culture at an outstanding school. I would think that Native Americans should be proud to represent this University. Yes, it is a show and the dance may not be completely true to the culture, but you are taking this out of context. Exaggerated notions must be made for such large places. Also, it is representing Native Americans and our Nation's history. The Chief is not to mock or discriminate. He is our mascot that represents a great university, a great culture, and a great part of our Nation's history, so why must he be banned? Power is attractive. I have known many students who fell into the same trap as I was once with this assistant professor (in Computer Science). This is a heartless person who would manipulate the situation to make girls falling for him. One after the others during the past three years....I have seen the pattern happened repeatedly. There were students who were sexually abused by this person including myself and many others. My question is how would personal behavior like this impact their tenure evaluation of those professors who take advantages of others especially women students from other culture? He brings lots of grants to the university. Why aren't there more programs in the University to support African-American Studies? During a meeting with administration it was said that the reason acts of intolerance and hatred that contribute to the hostile climate on this campus for people of color and minorities are not more directly addressed and talked about in a public way is because this will discourage potential minority students from enrolling in this university. The logic was a greater population of minorities will lead to a change in the campus climate. This was the justification given for whey Chancellor Herman used such mild rhetoric to describe the tacos and tequila incident. 1.) Would you still--after dialoging with a number of students affected by this and similar events-describe the event in similar terms? 2.) If the administration has not adopted the described policy of silence why does the Chancellor's office feel it is appropriate to send mass e-mails regarding Traffic safety but not acts of intolerance which pose a threat to students' emotional well-being and physical safety? (an email was sent regarding Tacos and Tequila to select students and the cultural house only). I am a high school teacher in the south suburbs of Chicago and 1978 graduate of U of I. I am disheartened to hear the "negative" "racial" experiences of my former students encounter her NOW!!! This school can regain it's high prestige if and only if you become a leader and support multi-cultural programming and put a STOP to hate crimes on this campus. Noreen Wessen What are the strategies that you are willing to promise today that will foster an open, safe environment for all students regardless of race once the Chief is retired? I just want to say that I am personally now ashamed to say that I attend this institution. The president undeniably gave inadequate responses and failed to address the issues at hand. His demeanor clearly showed the entire student body his genuine unconcern for the underrepresented minority body that deeply continues to disturb our community. Aaron spoke the truest words of the whole open mic and Native American speakers. The students do have the power to change a policy. If an issue such as the Chief is seemingly so divisive, then why are Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall filled to capacity? Student fans and alumni come out to support the team, the University, and consequently the Chief We need the pro-Chief supporters to speak out and not be silent. The onus is on the anti-Chief groups to enact the change. If they are so vehemently against the symbol of the University, then they do not support the University. Drastic change takes drastic action. Do not enroll for classes in the fall. A Native American speaker spoke of his wife and daughter graduating from here. If the Chief is as inappropriate as you supporters make it out to be, then take a strong stance. Take action. Physical action, not just verbal action. Daniel (Freshman in LAS, Major in History and Poli Sci) Chancellor, Why was a response via email delayed for almost almost a month concerning the "Tacos and Tequila" party. What took so long when similar situations happened on other campuses which were given an immediate response? Furthermore, its looks bad on you, as well as the administration t when you were on vacation the day of the rally/march. Many of us on this campus feel that you honestly don't care about the issues affecting minority students. Please answer each and every question thoroughly without "beating around the bush." P.S. What was your response to the "Bros and Ghetto Hos" party spring semester last year. If we use the definition of racism that states racism is stereotypes against another "race" and power, how can we reevaluate the actions and inactions of our administration and students? What is the University's definition of racism? If we really mean to solve racism as it is, why the panelists are all whites? They are maximizing the rest of the time. Can we move questions along? No Justice? NO CHIEF Q: Can we address the code of conduct? A disappointment was learning that recent racist incidents were "not punishable" under the student code. The code lists many specifics-but nowhere does it simply state that members of the UIUC community should act with integrity, honor, respect, and taking responsibility for our own actions. How can we create a code of conduct that follows the spirit of ethical conduct, instead of a legalistic, "letter of the law" code? We list 30 specific types of weapons prohibited, but we never say that we need to simply treat each other with respect and dignity. Lisa Bates, Assistant Prof President White, Will you insist that the Board vote to retire the mascot on March 13, 2007 here in Urbana? And that they do it not because of the NCAA ruling, but because it's the right educational and moral decision. Please address the safety issues for Afr.-Amrs. On this campus, as a student I don't feel safe-- I receive and see daily insults about my race everyday. Why does the President of the University seem so uneasy about the topic? Can he answer our questions? Why does he display himself not to care? If an institution is not a great institution in regards to the opportunities and quality of education it can provide, the least an institution can do is provide a safe place to learn. The University has tolerated racism on campus for years. Its indifference and slap-on-the wrist policy towards acts of hate has resulted in the escalation of hate and violence towards historically underrpresented students on campus. The business of this institution is students but what about the safety and the level of comfort for Native American, African-American, and Latino faculty and staff? Will the University allocate funds to increase security on campus? Will they provide the funds to escort students, faculty, and staff to and from class/work? If someone is harmed, will the University take responsibility for paying hospital bills or replacing property that is damaged? If students and employees are too scared to come to campus how can you say you stand for diversity? No students or prospective employees will want to come here. Getting rid of the chief is a step towards providing that open and diverse environment. In terms of recruitment of students of color, how should recruiters respond to parents and students that are concerned about racial tensions and safety on campus? What should college recruiters and admissions counselors tell these concerned individuals? We cannot lie about the racist atmosphere on campus. As representatives of the University, it is our job to have the best interaction [illegible] should we tell them not [illegible]? While it's protected by free speech and the fact that it is an agency independent from the University, Daily Illini, one of the most popular media, continues publishing comments or columns that perpetuate racist attitudes, prejudice and abusive power against members of minorities groups, such as LGBT people or Asian American, Muslims, what actions does the University administration willing, and be responsible to take to address this issue? Katehi and Herman: Why are you silent on the mascot when silence leads to misinformation . Miseducation, and perpetuation of racist attitudes and behaviors? President White, with all due respect, how is your silence on the mascot concionable when your role as leader of our campuses sets a tone for behavior and attitude? Why are all the administrators on the panel today white? Who is representing me, a women of color? What changes and progress have been made and/or implemented in response to the Chancellor's Committee on Latina/o Issues Report "Decades of Struggle." It's been over 4 years.... An atmosphere of either respect for all OR tolerance for disrespect and petty offenses, obliviousness and insensitivity, starts at the top. President White, Chancellor Herman, and the BOT: What will you do to improve the racial atmosphere of UIUC? How will you send a message to white students? If the chief is retired in March as it should be what will the campus administration do to prevent a backlash against Native students and students of color? I suggest a public relations campaign to replace CHIEF with RESPECT making use of role models like student athletes and free t-shirts. Racism The chief was imitated and talked about by college students. People are being insulted because of their race. Chief need to get kicked out. They need to stop now. Why were the consequences of ZBT and Delta, Delta, Delta so minimal , excluding them from recruitment for only the spring semester when the biggest time of recruitment is the fall? Why did they choose the homophobic Vineyard church for MLK? The University's MLK event at the Vineyard church was well integrated and well attended. However, the Vineyard believes and teaches that homosexuality is an abomination against God and a self-loving GLBT person cannot worship there openly. This is not the position of Mrs. King and would not have been the position of Dr. King. Please consider other churches next time such as McKinley Presbytarian Church. Thank you! How does President White feel about the Chief? Sexual identity, much like race, is something we are born with and cannot choose for ourselves. While I endorse the cultural studies programs on campus designated for individual races (i.e. Asian American Studies, African American studies, etc.), I must ask while LGTB resources are limited to an office in the union as opposed to a "center," and why the academic resources about sexual identity are so limited, ultimately encouraging homophobia across campus? Some pro-Chief students argue that if the chief is retired, we will forget the history of Native Americans in Illinois. What is an appropriate way to honor Native American history and how do you plan to do that if the Chief is retired? I am against the chief, so my real question is, what are better ways to honor [back missing] Do you think an "all white" Board is the reason for a lack fo action about Chief Illiniwek? What is this University going to say to incoming students when they ask about campus safety? Rape should not be the only issue we highlight (paraphrase) Would President White please tell the UIUC community what the strategic plan of the Board of Trustees is toward retiring Chief Illiniwek as the mascot/symbol/icon of this campus? We have heard rumors about the development of an African American Studies PhD. Do you see this as a necessary part of the solution for addressing issues of race and race education. If so, is it something this panel supports or not. Thank you. It seemed like many Natives argued the "CHIEF"'s outfit is a false Representation of the native American. Q: How would they feel about a realistic costume? Would that make the chief acceptable? Q: Why did Urbana police put bags over parking meters in front of the Native American House and only in front of the N.A. House? Q: Where's the pro-cheif discussion? When are you changing the U of I mascot and what are you changing it to? I'm an Academic Professional here at UIUC. From the time that I graduated from the University, i have found it very difficult to obtain a position here. Well, I'm employed here and am looking to grow and move forward. Why does it seem so difficult for underrepresented groups to obtain A.P. Positions? Why isn't there more diversity in the higher level Administration. There has been much talk of student/faculty committees. What about the inclusion of staff members into these committees? Staff member have opinions, are a part of this campus and deserve to have their voices heard, correct? Where are the members of the Board of Trustees? Why aren't they all here? Why the lack in response to Tacos and Tequila? What measures were taken by the administration against those involved. To Chancellor Herman: Why is it that you can denounce Tacos and Tequila but can't take a stance on the Chief? Why are certain departments allowed to have all white employees and not forced to diversity? Why aren't they move programs in the University to support African American studies? How do each of you believe you foster and environment of higher education and understanding of cultural, historical and sociological accuracy while depicting members of the human family who believe that depiction of them is inaccurate and degrading? Since the NCAA ruled against the University declaring Chief Illiniwek "hostile and abusive" in 2005 (and before). The administration has held several forums, discussions, and votes. However, no charge has been made or even an official stance been made. Why has the administration refused to find a method of compromise on the Chief debate until it exploded is the event today? As I'm looking at the panel I can not help but to see no one of color. I wonder if any of you, in reference to the panelists, can truly identify with the struggles of minorities? Do you understand, can you understand how it feels to be mocked because of your race? I ask that you view the issues placed before you from the view of a minority student on this campus. I am proud of the social justice work students, staff, and faculty are doing on this campus, I have the great fortune to be surrounded by many of them in Residential Life and University Housing daily. But, I am embarrassed for those that claim to lead yet know nothing about humanity, compassion, or true leadership. We are a farce and cowards until a stand is taken against racism. What will you do to increase enrollment, retention and graduation of African Amer./Latina/o, native Amer., Asian Amer. And LGBT students? The enrollment of African-American students still remains low, as the administration what are you planning to do to increase the numbers of incoming African-American freshman and transfer students? When will there be a committee established to retire the "Chief" and who will it be composed of? What programs will the University establish to promote an accepting academic environment? As a member of a diasporic community devastated by genocide, I ask the U of I administration to facilitate an atmosphere that builds solidarity among historically oppressed groups. What programs would be possible to build that understanding? How will you facilitate access to SORF and cultural funding since it is money paid by students for student activities? There is a lot of talk about under-represented populations and yet even in this discussion issues of able-ism are being ignored. What are you going to do about that? How are you planning to support this group? What action will be taken by the administration to resolve these issues? Why is President B. Joseph Herman not speaking on issues the most seeing that he is the president of the University of Illinois? Is he... What can we say about our institution when both privileged and minority students say, "There is nothing we can do, we can't change anything." This speaks to power of institutional racism on this campus from two very different vantage points, can the panel of administrators talk about this sentiment and ways that change can be brought about? What are the repurcusions for those who commit racist acts/prejudice acts? Is there a plan to prevent such ignorance on this campus? Why was the such a delay in action? What is this University going to say to incoming students when they ask about campus safety? Rape should not be the only class addressing issues campus wide. Would you create a farm bill by asking all Americans what should be Farm Policy? Why then are we forming racial and ethnic policy on the 'merits' of so many who know so little about it? Is "Indian" accepted as a politically correct term? Or is it offensive? 1. When doing searches for Admin positions have you ever searched specifically for Native Professionals? 2. Can you also with the 2007 commitment to resolve the mascot issue, also put Native professionals in leadership in 2007 (let us make Choices not follow) I want you to answer my question. Strength, integrity, honor, courage, spirit, do you have these qualities? Panel: What is your definition of racism? Racist caricatures? Are you racist? Question to President B. Joseph White- you stated that you have a clear conscious, but what do you have to say about what has been stated by the Native American community in the past and hear today about the Chief issues? Do you listen to us or merely hear us? When is the administration going to make information about hate crimes against women, racial minorities and those of the LGBT population available to all students, faculty and staff? At the 2006 convocation Chancellor Herman asked the incoming class to "listen," how can you, Chancellor Herman, listen to students of color on campus and hear their struggle, so that you can be empowered to challenge racism on this campus? President White, as a fellow graduate of the University of Michigan, where the Chief is banned from performing, can you stand up to the pressure, heal this University, and end this nonsense? It is long overdue. Take the lead and make us Wolverines proud! I have heard a good deal about obvious racism and power here at UIUC yet very little has been said about one of more "invisible" minorities, the LGBT community. Where does this group fit into the University's strategic vision? They lack a cultural house and cultural studies program. It makes me feel as if we don't exist at this University. We have a small office in the Union that isn't large enough to hold our group meetings. My question-- when will the University lift this group up out of the shadows and put it on equal footing with other groups? The problem does not seem to be with the changing the U of I's administration, but the perspective of the students. How should the university practically inform the larger un-knowing student body? Why wasn't this forum held at Assembly Hall? Did you not expect the students to come out and hold the panel accountable for their actions, or should I say inaction? Why, after 1 year since the proposal, is the LAS taking so long to approve the Interdisciplinary Asian American studies major? It sends a bad message and is an insult to Asian American Students and those interested in the connections of AAS w/other disciplines. The AAS program serves Asian American students and the University itself. What message does this send to African American, Latino Studies & Native American Studies programs? The vice Chancellor responded to an earlier question ("Why are you all white") by refusing to address it. Will none of the panelists acknowledge the immense privilege granted to them by the color of their skin? To President White: If we are only some of the owners of the U of I, which owners are the racist ones to whom you are beholden? James Salvo Could each panelist please describe briefly what your role is within the administration (i.e. what are the responsibilities of the Provost, Chancellor, etc.) and what do each of you see as your specific responsibilities in dealing with racism, power and privilege at UIUC? If diversity training and sensitivity training are voluntary, how will you reach the students who need to learn about respecting difference What will you require for all freshmen and for Greeks? Given the failure of UIUC in the recent EdTrust report and given the administration's strategic plan which include increased selectively, decreased freshmen enrollment, and increased enrollment of underrepresented racial, ethnic, sexuality, and socio-economic classes: How can we achieve these contradictory goals? Dean Riley/Vice Chancellor Romano: What message does it send to the campus community when the penalty for hate speech and threats of violence is nothing more than "probation"? If that is the limit under the current student code/procedures, what can be done to change this so that meaningful punishment is applied? What are we students supposed to do to address your biases, Chancellor, when you override student policy to show favortisim to a certain student group ex. When you override RSO policy to allwo only IPAC access to the Quad for their celebrations, but no one else has been allowed to use it, and the RSO Affairs Office doesn't support this special treatment. For each panel member: What do you think it would take for the University to retire the "Chief"? I think it is so unfortunate that leadership at the UIUC refuses to genuinely address the concerns raised related to racism, power, and privilege. Prez White, in your MLK speech you went on and on about having a picture of MLK. Can you confirm or deny the presence of a black friend somewhere in your background? I was told by my advisor that "You are not a PhD material. It doesn't matter how good you are in those classes. You are not." He treats me differently than he treats his male students who work with him. In this kind of situation, who can I turn to? He brings lots of grant money to the University. How can we show the demographics, racial demographics, of Illinois, in the administration of UIUC, if we don't show them in the student body? (graduate and undergraduate) To many students at U of I the chief represents a strong image that reflects the courage and unity of our student body. Is there any sort of compromise that we can reach where the chief symbol can be redesigned or retrained to become an acceptable image that does not offend people. Next time, can the forum be bigger so we can all get a seat? Is there a processes to remove Board of Administration members? If so, what is it? If not, why not? Thank you. Why are there NO administrators of color in central administration. It is not acceptable that the installment of white women suffice for administrators of color at "the table" to consistently keep our concerns at/on the table. We are always told that the administrators don't have the power to retire the chief. I'd like to hear what they can do and see vigorous efforts and action they will do to rid our campus of the racist "mascot." Knowing that the Chief is NOT an honor and clearly embarrasses Native Americans, Why is he still around? Is it the hatred in mankind that makes us keep watching the Chief dance around with pleasure? Isn't it extremely problematic that a forum for conversation about race issues has a panel consisting only of white people, most of which are male? Doesn't this set up all people of color expressing concern as pleading with a panel of those in power? Doesn't this only replicate and reinforce race/power relations? Has the question of the mascot ever been put to the students? If not, why?!?! This should not be an administrative decision, but a communal one. Is Chief Illiniwek the only (or most important) collegiate symbol that should be destroyed? If not, where do we stop-at what point will we realize that nearly every school mascot is/can be demeaning to someone? I don't get it- in light of all the evidence and based on what was presented today-why is it still a debate? Please set a timeline to remove the Chief. Why are all the panelists white? We have not discussed the title of the forum "Race, Power, and Privilege." how can you as leaders of this institution going to address this issue? And when is the University going to adopt a true mission of inclusivity. Do any of you believe the parallel between all of the racist acts which have happened on campus and the Chief truly exist? Question: When are you going to get rid of the Chief (a racist symbol) as the mascot of this school? The only answer I want to hear: NOW How is the university going improve race relations on this campus? I don't believe in creating diversity by just accepting students of color because that does nothing. How are you going to create a safe and inviting place for all minorities on campus/ Where we feel we belong, and are not left on the outside looking in. Why is the word privilege included in the title of the forum? Why has the BOT consistently voted for Chief Illiniwek when the Native American Bar Association, the cultural houses and other organizations have asked the university to retire the Chief? Regarding racist activity on campus-Being racist is not illegal. How are we supposed to rid the campus of the incredible amount of racism that is on this campus if not laws are broken? If we silence their beliefs of racism, are we not perpetuating the administration's silence upon the minority community at this university. What is your plan regarding that? Charles Lane How can we as a community, a group of intellectuals, reinstate the basic value for RESPECT? What is the administration doing to prevent further offensive parties at the university and any other racist activities/actions? Do you (anyone on panel) think that the recent racism and homophobia seen in the media and popular culture has sparked or influenced acts of hate and racism on this campus? By media and pop culture I mean Michael Richard's racist rant, Paris Hilton's recent racist remarks, the Grey's anatomy actor's homophobic remarks Mel Gibson's antisemitic remarks. There are many reasons to retire the Chief and related imagery. What are the primary reason(s) administration has retained the Chief? Alumni donors? Tradition? Outline the reasons the Chief has remained despite constant protest. Chancellor Herman: I understand that you deal with student safety, so I ask you why you do not promptly work to make this campus safe for ALL students. I ask that you eliminate the Chief as our mascot and if you do not please tell us all why you refuse to because I hear many arguments for anti-Chief; however, you do not [illegible] why we need the Chief. Please tell us all why you refuse to get rid of the Chief, or get rid of it? When will an LGBT house be established? How do you expect students not have racially themed parties with the Chief as a mascot? By not removing the Chief, students don't understand how racist their actions really are. How will you address the issue of being intolerant to social differences for incoming freshmens, so they too will know that there is no excuses for being intolerable? To many people, the Chief is believed to be an honest attempt to respect the Native American culture. An although the Chief may not be accurate to those ideals, the existence of the Chief represents an attempt to appreciate the Native American People. For those of us who find the Chief offensive but still want to proclaim the importance of these ancient people to Illinois, how do you suggest we do so? Is it even necessary? Keeping or Removing the Chief is obviously also a business issue. 1. How much is the Chief worth? (ticket sales, alumni contributions) 2. How much money is spent defending the Chief? 3. Consider the time spent discussing and fighting these issues, given present tuition rates, how much is resolution worth? There was talk of requiring students to take a Diversity course upon entrance at UIUC. Could you elaborate on what the course would entail and how it would be conducted? What is the progress of realizing this class to education against ignorance? How do you plan to protect the students as they protest against injustices? Is the student portraying the Chief attending this university on a scholarship? As a muslim, I witness a great deal of ignorance and prejudices against muslims in this campus. This was noticed by the DI publication of antimuslim cartoons. What is realy done from the leaders of this campus to prevent this in the future. Although this may seem small, i would like to ask why the term 'oriental' has been used within the Undergraduate Dining Hall service to describe salads and soups? For Asians and Asian Americans, this is a very negative term. Although this may seem small, we would appreciate that this word not be used to describe Asians and Asian Americans or foods. I think the success of this forum should suggest the need to have such open dialogues again this semester and once each semester until the Chief is removed. When is the next forum? Could we have it at Assembly Hall to fit the entire student population? What are the reasons that holds back and hinder the administration from making any real change and progress on the issue of the "Chief" and the racist atmosphere on campus? What will our new mascot be? When, in what ways, and with what degree of gravity will the racism of unofficial St. Patrick's Day be addressed and given the attention that is given to the Chief? President White, at this year's MLK celebration you told a story of a picture that hung in your office at Michigan. Someone asked "Do you have a picture of MLK for the Black Students?" You responded by saying it was for you. Does this picture still hang in your office? If so, where has his mission go? While I appreciated the racial diversity at the University's MLK celebration at the Vineyard Church, why did the University lend its support to this homophobic institution? (paraphrase) What are the official preparations to heal and protect students and faculty and staff in the post-Chief months/year? Financial and educational reparations and educational opportunities that foster multi-racial respect? My question is how much money is involved with keeping the Chief around? It seems as though the Flip side of this obvious racist issue is the fear that UIUC will not receive funds from our ignorant yet rich alumni. White: Will you insist that the BOT honor the request from the Oglala people that their regalia be returned to them. For Chancellor Herman: There is an undeniable relationship between racism and our University's unwillingness to address the use of sweatshops to produce University apparel. How do you justify using our privilege as a predominately white, wealthy institution to oppress people and women of color all over the world? If the Illinois campus is truly interested in diversity, why has the process of establishing an Asian American Studies major? We submitted the request for this interdisciplinary major in Liberal Arts and Sciences in December 2005 and promptly responded to requests for revisions made by the LAS committee on courses and curricula in May and October. Why is the process taking so long? The Chief is a symbol of pride and tradition when our students hold these images as a mascot at our sporting events, we are holding them at a high regard, not negative (such as the stereotypes depicted in "tacos and tequila"). By getting rid of the chief, you are not reducing racism, but only cause anger among students who see the Chief as something to be honored. Stereotypes exist. They are everywhere and not just toward minority groups. There are stereotypes about blondes or people from the suburbs vs. the city etc., and what I do not understand is why minority groups need all this attention. I believe in equality and this university should be fair to everyone. Yet, why do people of other races get scholar money from the University when there are others that qualify as well, maybe more? Why is it that the prominent Greek system at this institution constantly say they represent leadership, integrity, respect, etc. but obviously also embodies racism, and even disrespectful acts. What is the administration going to do about that? Fix the problem. What if the situation was flipped? What if a western European mascot represented this school? What if a fraternity/sorority of color held a "white face, yuppie" party? How would things be handled? Why do students, particularly those who are not of color or from privileged background, feel it is pleasurable or acceptable to hold or particulate in events that mock marginalized populations. Moreover, why are such individuals NOT speaking at this event. That is the root of the problem. I am a member of the staff and faculty. Our faculty and TA's of color often encounter considerable hostility from white students when they try to have discussion that involve thinking critically about race. Most majority students believe they are entitled to be exempt from critical thinking and discussion in this area. Are you aware of the pervasiveness of this problem? And what will we do about it? It's a significant climate issue. Considering UIUC's mascot, how can you explain the lack of emphasis on American Indian studies for the general student population? What will the administration do to protect faculty of color from racist faculty? Especially when all so-called avenues of appeal serve to sweep faculty on faculty racism under the rug? When (Please state the month and year) will African American Studies get a PhD program? Such a program is badly needed on this campus. Many of the policies recently considered are reactive after an event or conflict. What proactive steps are being taken to prevent future discriminatory conflicts? In light of the fact that retention rates of African-American, Hispanics and Native-American students is lower than the retention rates of white students-what actions is the administration taking to respond to this? What is the University doing to divest its funds from the genocidal government of Sudan? In the school year of 2005-2006, the University held a similar forum to address the issues of undocumented students. A meeting was followed and a committee was formed. When the school year was over and the Chancellor retired, the issue was dropped. My question is why do students always need to stand up and say what is wrong. Why do students always have to start over. The chancellor of student affairs has a job to address the issues that students address. These communities are diverse and many of the international students feel as if their place on campus is non-existent. How can we also address barriers to international students in aid and social events? How much is the Chief worth? How much is racial justice worth? Chancellor, President, When the alumni stop giving you their donations because you pulled our beloved Chief what will you do? When will you stand up and protect the great tradition of this University? What exactly are the factors being taken into consideration that are preventing the removal of the Chief? What has the administration done to change the Student Code to include and sanction racially discriminatory parties by student organizations? Robert Lampley What do they believe has to occur in order to insure that ethnic, women, gender, labor and sexuality studies on this campus receive the academic legitimacy that they merit, including departmental level resources that promote the success of such programs, rather than set them up to compete with one another? How will the administration heal and protect the university community in the post-chief moths and years when people are angry? What can be done to create a student/faculty grievance commission that oversees all accusations of hate crimes, functioning openly and transparently with respect to the grievance, actions taken, and outcomes of these actions? Does the Charter of the University of IL make a reference to the issue of race, and if so, is the U of I in violation of its Charter. Can this affect U of I Accreditation? A manifestation of cultural insensitivity and intolerance at the U of I, that is often overlooked, is unofficial St. Patrick's day. However, unlike the "Chief" and "Tacos and Tequilas", unofficial annually results in sexual assault, violence, destruction of property, abuse of homeless, and last year, death. These actions are masked in a mockery of Irish culture. What steps is the administration taking to rid the U of I of unofficial, and will it work with students that oppose this atmosphere of intolerance? What can the STOP coalition and larger community do to impress upon the Board of Trustees to recognize that, whether appointed or elected, they work for all the state's population, not solely the business and wealthy population and that we expect them to be accountable to the welfare of all students? This past MLK Day, students at Uconn and Tarleton State dressed up in the worst possible depictions of African-American stereotypes. Neither of these institutions has a mascot with racist undertones, yet these overtly racist acts still unfolded on campus. If this is truly an open forum shouldn't we broaden the discussion beyond the Chief? If UIUC is a "family" what are they prepared to do to end the "domestic" violence abuse in this family, as it perpetuated through both institutional and individual racism, hate crimes, and more specifically the perpetuation of the "Chief Illiniwek" mascot on this campus. With respect to the board of trustees authority and jurisdiction, and recognizing that as a chancellor and president neither of you have final say about whether the so called chief is retired. As leaders and educators within the academy why has neither of you taken a public stance either way? To Pres. White, When will the administration be ready to courageously step into the tradition of those who removed the KKK organization and a variety of other inappropriate practices from the UIUC campus in the past, by supporting collectively, the immediate removal of the "Chief Illiniwek" mascot and all iconography. Isn't it true that upon meeting with the board of trustees there was a decision to take minimal action in order to quiet down the students that are oppressed on this campus? Sources from [illegible] staff had said that you mean to sweep these issues under the carpet, host a meaningless forum in order to shut us up and give the minorities their say for a day? What is your explanation for this, and mind you, action speaks louder than words. Regardless of the decision made on the mascot, the amount of education and facilitation on the issues of race, power and privilege will have to increase to make this a safe and effective learning community. How do you plan to do this and how will you reach the thousands of students who believe these issues are not a problem? How can we make this a place where everyone feels welcome? What's up with the segregation in the residence halls? Why are most minorities at FAR/PAR? Not fair! What efforts to recruit people of color into the higher administration are in place at U of I As an African American, I don't feel as though I have ownership to this university although I pay equal tuition. How will you make U of I an environment where everyone feels at home? What is your plan to address the most recent facebook commnets? To Mr. Eppley: What exactly do you think the Chief honors? How would you explain the administration's awareness of racial division within the campus housing system? There is a penalty or punishment for fighting because it is not appropriate behavior. Racism and racial acts are not appropriate behavior either. What actions are going to be taken against people who post racial comments on board around campus, facebook, and any other public display? I have just received a handout entitled "Coalition Demands"-- upon reading the Demands it seems to me that the University should have already incorporated these issues into its Mission Statement since they are just goals-when will the University enact these just goals? Given the recent Facebook racial hate speech and threats of violence, what concrete steps will you take (as responsible administrators) to ensure that ALL of our students-especially students of color-will be safe from racial violence on campus? Are any members of the Board of Trustees present today? How will they hear today's comments and consider the Chief issues fairly without every member present? Isn't this forum what they call "consensus building"? As I'm looking at the panel I can not help but to see no one of color. I wonder if any of you, in reference to the panelists, can truly identify with the struggles of minorities? Do you understand, can you understand how it feels to be mocked because of your race? I ask that you view the issues placed before you from the view of a minority student on this campus. Chief, Race, Recruitment, Retention Why must we have a mascot that makes fun of someone's IDENTITY? Retire Mascot. Dr. White, you mentioned "speaking truth to power," and I am wondering how you yourself plan to "speak truth to power" to the board of trustees about getting rid of the chief? Do you see a difference b/w the chief [illegible] symbol and the mascot? 1. You have a group of people who have made it blatantly clear that the Chief offends their people. Whether the Chief is racist or offensive is not a choice to be made by the administration. It is a feeling of those offended. 2. in 2005, the NCAA prohibited the University from hosting any post-season athletic events on campus, b/c of the Chief. They find the mascot offensive. 3. You claim that there are no financial reasons for keeping the chief. So, I ask you all this: If you have acknowledged these facts, what exactly are you waiting for to remove this mascot? Just a suggestion: Why not make Chief an actual Native American, who can correctly represent the values an integrity of Native American community? Where did the choreography for the Chief come from? Who is teaching the men who portray the chief the dances? For many years when this University has been asked to retire the chief, the University replys "We honor Indian People with the Chief." The people who you claim to honor say "You do not honor us," "This does not honor us, it is hurtful to us." If you truly want to honor Indian people, why do you not listen to what they say? Why does the University of Illinois choose to perpetuate racial stereotypes? Why can't there be middle ground? Change some things about Chief Illiniwek so he won't be insulting. A University in Florida had the same problem, but came to a common ground and fixed the problem. Can't the U of I do the same? Rachel Briese I understand why the chief is an inappropriate mascot and can be seen as oppressive; However, I can't understand what can be done. What would replace the Chief? A mascot does not necessarily represent an institution, but rather brings the institution together, students chanting and supporting the school together at games and events. By no means am I supporting the use of the chief, I would just like to know what will happen when/if the chief retires. CH How do you feel about the very large number of University of Illinois alums who will withdraw their generous donations to the school on the event of the chief's retirement? What if we kept the Chief mascot but abandoned the Dance routine (ex: KC Chiefs) Would it be possible to compromise with the opposing Indian population so that Chief can be viewed as respectable in their eyes also? Do you believe that the "Chief" is an acceptable mascot? To President White, Why do you choose not to tell us directly that you're personally anti-chief? Who are you being neutral for, and how much are they paying you? President White (all of the panel), do you have any items i.e. shirts, hats, etc. which display the chief or the word "chief"? If the term "fighting Illini" and all "Chief" iconography are removed from the University, what will the new "mascot" be? How will the University identify itself with other Big Ten schools and other Universities? For Chancellor Herman: I am concerned with the intellectual environment at this university-please explain how retaining the Chief complements your stated goal of making the U of I a world class university. Is it possible for the board to come up with a symbol/mascot that represents the diverse community that UIUC claims to have? How much money are alumni giving to keep the chief? (Get Rid of the Chief!) Do you feel that you cannot get rid of the Chief because of the small number of opposers vs. the large majorities that agree with it? Do you understand that the chief is racist? Is anyone on the panel willing to say publicly that it is time to retire the "chief"? The Chief and events like the "Tacos and Tequila" parties are not merely "insensitive" (which frames the problem as being that of 'overly-sensitive minorities") but are powerful tools that the system of white supremacy which we have inherited, and which is our responsibility to acknowledge and to work together to dismantle." Chancellor, please explain why you think the "chief" does NOT represent or perpetuate racial stereotypes and divisions. The University of Illinois is not the first, nor is it the only university to have a Native American as a mascot. Other universities have abandoned their racial mascots (i.e. redmen became redstorm). Why is it so hard for the University to abandon the chief when other universities have? I am pro-Chief. If you have problem with the way he dances, why don't you just teach us "Non-Indian American" people the right way to do it and just be proud that the Chief, who is coming from your culture, is a symbol of one of the best universities in the nation? Put yourself in the Native Americans shoes. Now I am a blackman and I know it's hard to think that Chief Illiniwek is a good asset to the campus. Look at it if it was you and I know if I can change you can change. Everybody can change. We began this forum with the phrase that "we all know words wound" and we all know actions wound. President White, how do you want Native Americans to respond to the universities' "Chief"? Why has the board taken so long to eliminate the Chief? If the "idea" and "reality" of the Chief has caused such harm to Illini Students, either emotionally and worse physically, why has the board not loved and cared for this University enough to stop this? Education should be our primary goal. Instead of attacking the figure of the Chief, couldn't we use it as a learning moment for not only the students of this school but for all students and sports fans everywhere? It's not right to defend the Chief as he is now, but what if he could instead be a demonstration of the aspects of Native American culture that Native Americans and everyone is proud of? Does the University of Illinois accept donations from alumni or donors who specifically identify themselves as supporting the retention of the Chief mascot? If so, why is an acceptable practice? You are sitting amidst a group of passionate alumni, how will you motivate them to be proud giving alumni (when so many alumni of color have left here scarred over many years of attending UIUC). If you can embrace a new logo for your brand, can't you embrace a new mascot??? new PhD, Department of History Why is the University afraid to separate Tradition from the Chief? Why not change the Chief from a symbol of racism to one of pride? Is it not an acceptable compromise to have the Chief become an accurate depiction of the native american way of life? Would it be possible to hold forums like this each year as a way for the administration to see how students and the community feel about the University of Illinois? Also, a formal response session from the administration for the state of affairs at U of I The University has employed the C.A.R.E. program to address the issue of sexual assault on campus. Given that there is indeed an issue of racism and race relations on campus, will the University employ another program to address this issue as well? I believe it should. The ignorant comments expressed by the man in the orange shirt are proof of a lack of education. A one-day, two-hour class would not inconvenience anyone. Even if views aren't changed, the behavior could be. DL I want to know if the university can approach issues of equity and equality by taking it on as a "human issue." What kind of long-term (because that is what it will take) programs do you feel could be implement to address "human issues"? 2/1 "Race, Power and Privilege" Forum Questions 19
